Workshop tests

Autumn 2020 – Winter 2021

We are constantly optimizing our processes and sometimes we uses a bit untraditional methods.

We have changed the way the robot moves – this has been done with hard R&D work and tons of tests in our workshop

Changing the move system also meant validating a new Leading Edge Protection (LEP) material. To minimize the waste of real LEP material we have used both ketchup and honey in our tests!

Simulated offshore test

July – September 2020

The simulated offshore test took place in DK and in SE. We are very positive about the test. We had experienced offshore employees to run this test and despite this simple set-up, it has been performed in a very realistic way.

We are convinced that we with only a few additions and corrections to the onshore method will be able to mirror the operation to the offshore demonstration.

We will update

  • Training docs updated with the specific requirements
  • Safety and risk assessments are sharpened even further
  • The role handling and operating the robot will be a combined role until the offshore repair reparation is thoroughly tested and we can move remote control onshore.
  • The ancillary equipment will be extended with a lifting bag
  • Specific offshore rope settings will be implemented


Highlights from yearly EUDP report

July 2020

The report covered the periode from July 1st 2019 to June 30th 2020.

  • SGRE new test agreed in ZA
  • Trolley and pulley is upgraded. We have rebuild a 20 foot container to MRCC – Mobil robot control center which is a combined transport, warehouse, workshop of control office
  • Improved the process time of robot
  • Prototype of communication module is ready
  • Have fine results from ZA which made us ready for the coming simulated offshore test
  • Training concept for site involved staff is defined

Covid-19 impact

March 20

Unfortunately, we had to stop the ongoing operation in ZA due to covid-19 lock down and pull our people back home.

Good news were that the performance of the robot was proven successful and we are looking forward to do the simulated offshore test as soon as the covid-19 situation allows access to a site again.

SGRE works on several test site options.


Steering Group meeting

March 2020

In connection with the steering group status meeting, we were happy that our contact from the Centre for Energy Administration could join us.

Normally all progress in the project is communicated in written. So being able to demonstrate and discuss the project face to face was a nice and very appreciated experience.


 

Winter test 2020

October – March 2020

We spend the autumn 2019 optimizing and testing continuously to improve the process time of the robot repair.

We extended our test facilities in the workshop to support the systemized test.

With these great facilities we could test the R&D improvements quickly and our robot operators got really profound training, which made us ready to go to the field again.

SGRE arranged a test in Jeffreys Bay in South Africa.

Going to South Africa required a rethink of the transportation of all the goods needed for the repair process. As we extended the distance to the field test sites, we had to extend the capacity of the Mobile Robot Control Centre (MRCC) as well. We extended our MRCC with a 20-foot shipping container which we rebuilt to work as a combined transportation unit, workshop and office for the robot pilots.

We started in South Africa in beginning of January and this time we did not have instability issues and our improvements worked successfully.

We even got the following nice testimonials from Chrisjan Cornelius, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm:

First arrival of Rope Robotics equipment to site seemed to be an ordinary delivery but this soon changed when the container door where opened.

A well suited office / workshop /store room with everything at your fingertips.

Technology was at the forefront when you step into the Rope Robotics teams workspace.

Jeffrey Bay accompanied 5 technicians from Rope Robotics during their project duration and it came clear why they where chosen for the this unique career path. They where experts in their field and all round spot-on guys with safety at the forefront.

With the high risk in elevated work Rope Robotics will be the answer to a reduced risk when doing elevated work.

The repair process has to be documented and is of high importance to us & with the robot this was done in the most detailed manner I have ever seen. The robot was in its element every step of the leading edge repair process being it sanding, cleaning, applying filler & spray painting.


Steering group meeting

October 2019

We just held meeting in the steering group to present the new project plan proposal.

We wished to extend the project with 12-18 months. We wished to add more onshore tests to minimize the risks and ensure we had the platform needed to stabilize the robot operation before going offshore.

The plan was accepted. Subsequently it was approved by EUDP office.


Test of communication and logistic set-up in Germany

July-August 2019

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) arranged test facilities in north west Germany. We had updated the communication module based on earlier testing and the upgrade worked well.

The logistic set-up with the use of the trolley and the first version of a mobile robot control centre, did also support the operation perfectly.

We were though challenged by the process time, which led to the conclusion that the offshore mature process needed more time. Project extension request was drafted and sent.

July 2019

The report covered the periode from Janaury 1st to June 30th 2019.

  • Two robots for the coming field test is build
  • Designed and produced new transport frame for easier handling of robot on the ground
  • Executed lots of filler and paint durability test
  • Weekly partner meetings
    • First field test agreements gets signed
    • Fine-tuning repair and quality specifications
  • New and more stable communication model and optimized groundbox.
  • Server setup improved with automated updates

With the test agreement signed, we are ready to test onshore in North West Germany.

We are very delighted to announce: “Rope Robotics has received funding from EUDP (Energiteknologisk Udviklings-og Demonstrationsprogram) and is joint effort with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy under the project journal ref: 64018-0557″
